Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn't MD5 secure?
MD5 is cryptographically broken -- it's computationally feasible to create two different inputs that produce the same MD5 hash (a "collision"), which undermines its use for security-critical integrity or password checks.
When is it still okay to use MD5?
For non-security purposes like quick duplicate-file detection or matching against a legacy checksum that was already published in MD5. For anything security-sensitive, use the Hash Generator tool's SHA-256 or SHA-512 option instead.
Does hashing my text upload it anywhere?
