Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the comparison ignore case and whitespace?
Hex-encoded hashes are sometimes shown in uppercase and sometimes lowercase, and copy-pasting often picks up stray spaces or line breaks. Ignoring these differences avoids false "no match" results caused by formatting alone rather than an actual difference in the underlying data.
What does "No match" mean?
It means the two hash strings are different, which usually indicates the file or text was altered, corrupted, or that one hash was generated with a different algorithm than the other.
Do I need both hashes to be the same algorithm?
Yes -- comparing an MD5 hash against a SHA-256 hash of the same file will never match, even if the file is identical, since different algorithms produce entirely different output.
